Leather Restoration Project: Chesterfield Sofas & Armchairs Restored at MOD Boscombe Down
Leather Chesterfield Cleaning and Restoration

At Hampshire Leather Care, we were recently commissioned to clean and restore multiple Chesterfield armchairs and sofas for the Ministry of Defence at Boscombe Down. These classic leather pieces had seen years of use in a busy environment — showing signs of fading, dryness, and surface wear. Our task was to restore their natural richness, comfort, and professional appearance while maintaining the character that makes Chesterfields so iconic.

Step 1: Deep Cleaning and Surface Preparation
Each sofa and armchair was first thoroughly cleaned using specialist pH-balanced leather cleaners, designed to safely remove accumulated body oils, surface soiling, and airborne contaminants. This initial stage is vital — not just for appearance, but to prepare the surface for restoration coatings and ensure proper adhesion later in the process.
We carefully agitated and extracted residues using professional tools and lint-free cloths, protecting surrounding materials and flooring throughout the process.
Step 2: Leather Rehydration and Colour Restoration
Once clean, we treated each piece with a leather rehydrating cream to replenish the natural oils lost over time. Chesterfield leather, particularly older or aniline types, can dry and lose flexibility — leading to cracks if untreated.
After conditioning, we matched the original tones using our custom pigment-blending system, applying professional-grade colour coatings to restore uniformity across seating, arms, and back panels. The colour was built up gradually to maintain the original patina, then sealed with satin and semi-matt topcoats for a soft, natural finish.
Step 3: Detailing, Protection & Final Finish
Every piece was finished by hand, ensuring all creases, buttons, and tufted areas were evenly treated and finished. We then applied a durable protective topcoat to guard against future wear and staining, leaving the leather supple and resilient.
Finally, each Chesterfield was buffed to a gentle sheen — preserving that deep, luxurious glow associated with traditional English leather.

A Project with History and Heritage
Restoring furniture within an MOD setting carries extra responsibility — maintaining heritage pieces while ensuring they remain serviceable for everyday use. At Boscombe Down, the Chesterfields form part of the base’s formal seating areas, representing both comfort and tradition. We’re proud to have helped extend their lifespan while respecting their original craftsmanship and design.
Carried Out Personally by Our Family Team
As with all our work, this project was completed personally by Richard and Michelle, using only professional systems and coatings. We don’t subcontract — every stage, from cleaning to colour-matching and final sealing, is performed in-house with full attention to detail.
