Marine Leather Cleaning and Restoration

At Hampshire Leather Care, we were recently commissioned to restore cream pigmented leather upholstery aboard a luxury yacht moored at Swanwick Marina on the River Hamble. The leather seating areas had suffered from UV fading, salt exposure, and surface wear — common issues in marine environments. Our goal was to restore the soft, even finish and supple feel while ensuring long-lasting protection against the elements.

The Challenge of Marine Leather

Leather used in yachts and boats is exposed to some of the toughest conditions — constant temperature changes, sea air, and high UV exposure through large cabin windows. Even high-quality pigmented marine leather can lose its colour, become dry, and develop micro-cracks over time. Regular maintenance and professional restoration are essential to preserve both comfort and appearance.

Step 1: Deep Cleaning and Salt Removal

We began by gently but thoroughly cleaning the entire leather seating area using marine-safe, pH-balanced leather cleaning solutions. These remove ingrained dirt, body oils, and salt residue without damaging the pigment layer or stitching. All work was carried out carefully within the confined yacht cabin, using low-moisture systems to prevent saturation or odour.

Step 2: Colour and Pigment Restoration

The original cream finish had become patchy and dull, particularly on high-contact areas such as the armrests and seat cushions. We carried out a pigment reapplication and top-coat restoration, using professional leather colourants precisely matched to the original shade. The pigment layers were applied evenly, restoring the uniform satin finish that defines luxury marine interiors. Once colour was restored, we sealed the surface with a marine-grade protective topcoat, designed to resist UV exposure and light moisture — vital for yachts moored along the Hampshire coast.

Step 3: Conditioning and Final Protection

After refinishing, the leather was treated with a UV-inhibiting conditioning cream to help prevent drying and future fading. We then applied a clear protective lacquer over the restored pigment — adding an extra layer of defence against UV rays, salt, and surface abrasion. This durable finish ensures the leather remains resilient, easy to clean, and retains its elegant satin sheen even under demanding marine conditions. Finally, we hand-buffed the upholstery to restore its soft tactile feel and luxury appearance, leaving the cabin bright, refreshed, and ready for use.

Why Professional Leather Care Matters on Yachts

Yacht interiors often use high-quality pigmented or semi-aniline leather for both durability and luxury. However, marine conditions accelerate ageing — sunlight, salt air, and temperature changes cause protective coatings to break down. Professional restoration not only restores colour and feel but also extends the lifespan of expensive leather seating, saving owners significant replacement costs.

A Personal Service, Delivered by Specialists

All restoration work was personally completed by Richard and Michelle Lee-Costello, using advanced training, professional coatings, and approved systems.
