A typical day's work in Rerstoring Leather Upholstery
1. Leather Identification & Assessment
Before any work begins, the leather type is identified — such as pigmented, semi-aniline, aniline, pull-up, or coated leather. Each type requires a specific approach, as absorbency, finish type, and coating thickness vary. We also assess the extent of structural wear, surface coating breakdown, and previous repair attempts, ensuring a correct and safe plan of action.
2. Deep Cleaning & Surface Preparation
All areas are professionally cleaned using pH-balanced leather cleaning solutions to remove oils, dirt, and residues that can interfere with adhesion. For restoration, we then prepare the surface by micro-abrasion and degreasing using specialist solvents and fine-grade pads. This ensures that new pigments and coatings can bond effectively.
3. Repairing Damage
Cracks, scuffs, and small tears are carefully stabilised and repaired using flexible leather fillers, binders, and adhesives:
- Cracking & surface wear – reinforced with leather binder and flexible fillers to restore surface integrity.
- Tears or holes – internally backed with fine leather or fibre mesh and bonded using high-strength adhesive systems.
Each repair is tested for flexibility before colour application to ensure it will move naturally with the leather.
4. Colour Restoration
Using precision-matched pigments, we restore the original tone and finish of the leather. Our colour system is water-based & high-flex ensuring a long-lasting result. Colour is applied in fine, controlled layers using airbrush or sponge techniques, depending on the area and required finish (matt, satin, or gloss). Edges are feathered for a seamless blend into the surrounding leather.
5. Topcoat & Protective Sealing
Once colour is restored, a durable polyurethane protective topcoat is applied — this is the same technology used in leather manufacturing. It provides:
- Abrasion resistance
- UV protection to reduce fading
- Improved cleanability and stain resistance
Topcoats can be adjusted for sheen, giving the leather a consistent, even appearance.
6. Conditioning & Finishing
After curing, the leather is conditioned with professional protection creams containing anti-friction and anti-dye transfer agents. These help maintain flexibility and extend the life of the restored finish.
7. Aftercare & Maintenance
Every repair and restoration is followed by guidance on correct cleaning and protection intervals. Proper aftercare ensures that the new surface coating remains supple, cleanable, and resistant to everyday wear.At Hampshire Leather Care, every leather repair or restoration is carried out with precision and a deep understanding of how different leathers age, react to use, and respond to treatment. aniline dye restoration
Rehydration and Fibre Preparation
Because aniline leather is porous, we carefully reopen the surface fibres using rehydrating solutions and soft mechanical action. This allows new dye to penetrate evenly without creating tide marks or patchiness.
Colour Matching and Dye Selection
We then
mix custom dyes to match the original tone. These transparent dyes penetrate the leather rather than sitting on top, restoring depth and richness while preserving the leather’s natural character and grain.
Depending on the level of fading, we may apply:
- Mild tone correction: to even out UV fade or light staining.
- Full recolouring: to completely restore the base tone and depth across all panels.
Application Process
The dye is applied in multiple light layers, allowing gradual build-up of colour. This can be done by hand sponge or airbrush, ensuring control and evenness. Each layer is heat- or air-dried before the next is applied, allowing the colour to integrate naturally into the leather fibres.

Jane Weller
Mayor PA Basingstoke
"From start to finish fantastic service. Arrived as expected on site to restore and renovate two very old 1930's leather chairs in the Mayoral Parlor. Both chairs were starting to crack and leather scuffed in areas, also some small tears and fraying at the bottom of the chairs needed some desperate attention. All repaired to high quality and both chairs look great. The color match spot on and finish fabulous. Can't thank both enough. Great friendly team and explained all along the way ensuring I had confidence along the way. Fabulous highly recommended."
